94 lb Cadet Freestyle All-Americans
Kase Mauger is one of the most accomplished athletes in Idaho. Not many athletes are able to claim honors like World Team Member or All-American by the end of their athletic careers. Despite being early in his wrestling career, Kase can claim both of those honors and continues to pile up his accolades.
A year ago at this tournament, Kase lost his first match, but battled back to the All-American round. Kase would finish the tournament in 8th place. The situation this year, was very different. Mauger entered a bracket with nearly twice as many participants.
He would begin the tournament with two quick, dominating victories, out scoring opponents 20-0, each match ending in less than a minute. His third match would be against a tough
Oklahoma opponent, Carter Young. Kase would suffer defeat, and Young would eventually finish in second place. Mauger rebounded with a win over the number two seed in the tournament. His next match would result in a loss to the eventual fourth placer. Finally, Kase made quick work of his last opponent and fellow All-American, 10-0.
When asked about his performance, Mauger said that he felt "okay." With regard to his being an All-American again, he commented that it "still means a lot I just wish I had done better." Like any true champion, Kase expects a lot from himself and sets high goals. Looking ahead to the Greco tournament, he hopes to finish in the top three. He also hopes to beat both of the two freestyle finalists. Congratulations to Kase for earning All-American honors in freestyle.
